Why I've Been Away

Hello all, I haven't been able to post lately because my computer broke awhile ago and I won't be able to get one anytime soon.  We are 7 weeks into the schoolyear using My Father's World Adventures and I'm surprised at how fast things are going by.  I'm beginning to wonder if the pace is a little too fast actually.  The Bible component isn't as strong as I thought and the history lessons are so swift that it's hard to let things marinate.  I am very happy to have guideline to go by however.  Looks like I'll be looking things over again for next year as I might not want to continue with MFW.  Spelling and math are going well.  My 1st grader is using MFW 1st grade for learning to read.  It's much more hands on than The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading.  Sorry I don't have any links for these, I'm trying to write this quickly at my aunt's house.

I'm still struggling to keep a one year old happy during school time!  He doesn't nap for more than 1 hour a day so I'm really in a pickle!  Any suggestions?

Hope your school year is going great!

Homeschool - What We are Using This Year

I've been trying to get ready to start school by Monday.  I'm using Adventures in My Father's World from My Father's World curriculum.  It is a program for 2nd or 3rd graders before they go into the 5 year cycle of chronological history.  This program focuses on American History.  It's designed for kids who don't have older siblings in the 5 year cycle as MFW can be used similar to a unit study for all your kids.  With that in mind that is why I chose it for my 2nd and 1st grader to use together.

Subjects include Bible, history and geography, science, art, music, and read-alouds.  These are a part of the core of the curriculum and all revolve around the biblical concept for the week.  The only thing I have to add is math, spelling, English and foreign language.  Fridays are light work to allow for Nature Study outdoors.  For math, my second grader is finishing up RightStart level B, soon to start C.  My first grader is starting level B.  We use Spell to Write and Read for spelling, you can read more about it here.  My second grader will use Primary Language Lessons by Emma Serl for English.  It's a one hundred year old or so book of language lessons that are conducive to a Charlotte Mason mentality.

I want to start working with some alphabets for foreign language.  We will probably start with Greek and maybe Latin.  I would like to include Hebrew somewhere too.  I know that seems a little crazy but I'm just starting with alphabets!  Another idea I have is to learn verses in English and Spanish.  That way they can get the feel for the language and pronunciation and move on to grammar when they are ready.

So, I'm a little worried about fitting it all in with a 3 year old and a 1 year old who won't nap and is attention seeking.  I think we might have some long school days because of this.  My Father's World suggests that we can finish by lunch but I'm not seeing that as possible.  I still have quite a bit of teaching reading to do with my 1st grader using The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading as well.

My oldest has been counting down the days until school starts so I guess I better get it together!

3 in 30 Friday - End of Month

I haven't been blogging too much lately.  I'm a little uninspired but I thought I would start back up with 3 in 30.

Goal one was completed awhile ago.

Goal two - get homeschool area cleaned up.  I just started this today!  I want to start school next week, hopefully that happens.  I definitely have a mess going on and I would like to plan a little better this year.  I want to make sure I'm hitting benchmarks with each child, so at least having the first quarter planned out might help.  I'm not sure.  I'm not one for planning!
MESS!

MESS!

Goal three - teaching the kids some new chores.  I definitely realized that my kids needed some reinforcement of the chores they should know.  So I have been making a conscious effort to work on this.

I can't believe August is over - I'll have to be thinking about September goals.

Eggs!

I know it's been awhile but I've been feeling a lot of morning sickness and sitting in front of the computer is not that fun.  On a positive note - we've started getting eggs from our chickens.  Well, really just one egg a day!  Only one hen is laying right now, I'm pretty sure it's the fat one.  The eggs look and taste great.  I took a picture but haven't had a chance to charge my camera to upload it.  I'm really thinking that we we will need to get about three more hens next year.  I hate to say it but we are now using a dozen eggs in our scrambled eggs.  As you can tell just about everybody wants 2 eggs a day.  The chickens from the farm club haven't been laying very well so I can only get 2 dozen for every 2 weeks from them - and the price went up.  I have to supplement with eggs from Costco.  I'd like to never have to buy eggs again though!
